There are other well-written posts about why doctors are always late?

This is just my take.

My primary care physician is a very busy physician. I actually worked with her when I did my Family Medicine clerkship as a third year medical student. we saw 40 patients everyday. She is known to be late all the time. Her patients could be waiting 20 minutes, 30 minutes or sometimes, only 5 minutes. My mom schedules the earliest appointment because she knows she will be the first one and will be seen at a decent time.

My OBGYN on the other hand, her wait time is not as terrible. I only had to wait 30 minutes once. Most of the time. I was seen in 15-20 minutes.

I love my children's pediatrician. She is a busy person too. (Primary care doctors are BUSY. see the trend?) we only have to wait 5 minutes or 10minutes at the most.

How about me as a physician?

It gives me great anxiety when I am running behind. I DO NOT LIKE IT ONE BIT.

But why are doctors always late?

Even though the chief complaint or reason for consult or reason for follow-up is a one-liner, it almost always end up being >2 or more problems to be addressed.

I like to take my time and be thorough.

There are good things and bad things about that.

My time allotted for the patient end up being spent with them (which is fine, right?) but that means all the phone calls, and notes and ordering, and checking labs happen after clinic.

Some though, need to be done right there in between patients...

I ask for a little understanding. Not all doctors are all about money. (in fact peds doctors who do not do procedures, don't make much compared to their surgery colleagues)

some do care for their patients. Some go an extra mile for their patients.

When I am in that room, you have my time and attention. You are my patient. you are important. Same thing goes for that person before you or after you.

So I apologize if I am running behind.  I may be comforting that anxious mom. I may be counseling that teen who is depressed but in denial. I may be giving bad news.

Sometimes, I am just plain behind without doing anything out of the ordinary. Sorry to keep you waiting.

Good thing, I am rarely that behind!

but that means that phone calls, messages, 'extra stuff" happen at the end of the day.

During medschool, this is a story I heard when I was looking at a career in peds.
you see 3 cars parked at the doctor's lot.

BMW - that's the ortho docs car
Acura - that's the adult gastroenterologist car
20 year old toyota - that's the pediatrician's car

I am not making fun of my peds colleagues, as I am on the same boat. I did not choose medicine or peds for the money. I would have quit a long time ago if it's all about that.

  2. I had no idea you were a doctor, how cool. But I have to agree that doctors and dentists are always late and as a mom to a little one when going for the little one's appointment, it can be frustrating. Love how you explained yourself though. Thank you for being a doctor. This look is so simple but yet so chic. I just love the sweater and peep-toe floral flats so much Sarah. =) Hope you had a great Mother's day, too.

I welcome you to stop by my blog, as well. I run a linkup on Thursdays. I would love for you to join me pretty lady. Your style is too good not to be shared so welcome by. Thanks and have a great weekend! Ada. =)

  3. Here's what I wish my doctor knew--it's okay to have a quick appointment. After my OBGYN was running super late, she finally came to my routine checkup in the middle of my fourth pregnancy. She found the heart beat, measured me, asked if I had any questions, and when I didn't she went on to chit-chat about all sorts of things.

I wanted to tell her to move on to her next patient! I wasn't going to feel slighted if I waited for her for over an hour and she only spent 5 minutes with me. That's fine! I know she is a great doctor--she has spent inordinate amounts of time helping me through miscarriage, testing, etc. I certainly enjoyed talking to her, but I didn't want her to feel guilted into spending a certain amount of unnecessary time with me because I had been waiting. Anyway, I just wanted to make that known. :)
