instagram round up

Face of a mom when she found out 👩🏻
School is closed 📖
E-learning has to happen 💻
She has to work 👩🏻‍⚕️

I’m not surprised that schools are closing to prevent the rapid spread of #Coronavirus. First it was #travelban of work related business travels, then the #universities cancelling face to face teaching. Then conferences and meetings in the #Medschool had to be done #viazoom
I worked all week this week. It felt like a #typicalweek at #rileyHospital. There’s panic outside the walls. But inside, #carecontinues. The sickest still needs care. It’s all covid in the news. But cancer, seizures, trauma, heart attacks, pneumonia, meningitis - we still have to treat those.
Let’s not freak out.
Avoid the panic and hysteria. Focus on what’s important: why are we saying #stopthespread? It’s not just “so I don’t get sick” but so we don’t overwhelm and reach over- capacity of hospitals. Where will those kids with cancer and meningitis and respiratory failure and heart disease go when the hospitals are full?
Wash hands.
#coveryourcough
#surviveElearning for 2-3 weeks
Think and pray for those moms and dads who still have to work.... think of those that DON’T have work because stadiums, ticket booths, concession stands are closed.
#itsucks whichever point of view you look at it.

#pandemic

It’s been a long week guys.
Just a mere 8 days ago, I was worried about working all week at the hospital. ”exposing” myself since I’m covering the hospital #whereallthegermslive
God knows(knew) how to #settlemynerves. The #neurologyservice has #sickkids (not covid). I had to cover for a colleague (not a big deal) as it was just a #hiandbye type of thing. Then organized two meetings (#hellozoom 👩‍💻 👨🏻‍💻).
I was busy being a #neurologist that I’m glad I wasn’t on #socialmedia much. I kept up with #nprnews and I received back to back messages from our hospital, university, kids’ school, #medicalschool. I wasn’t totally #offthegrid
During these tough times, I’m thankful for my #faith. I still have #freakoutmoments but then I #stepback and #lookatthebigpicture
God is #biggerthanthis#pandemic doesn’t equal panic. I won’t be careless but I’m also #atpeace. (Or try and try to be!) let’s #factcheck and not #letfearwin. >>> #happyyellow for a #crazyweek#birdies shoes but feel like #slippers! @derrick49ers and I went for walks almost everyday when we were newlyweds. We did it several times a week during the warm months. All pre-kids. Then I started having babies. Call it #feelingtiredallthetime and #postpartumexhaustion or just plain #imafraidtogooutside solo.
There’s just so many reasons (like my seasonal allergies) I stopped going for walks.
Besides school pickup, I’m trying to bring #letsgoforawalk back.

A new month.
How is it the third month of 2020 already? 🤯
Covid-19 is creating hysteria in the country. At work, we are getting 3-5 emails daily regarding detection, testing, prevention.
Let’s not forget that #influenza is still pretty deadly.

thoughts of a headmistress and an MD

It's day three of homeschooling.
What a contrast of last week and this week. I had long days as the neurology consult doc week ending Friday the 13th. This week,  I am running the Delima academy. I am the headmistress of our "boarding school." At least I like to think I am the headmistress. Sounds British and foreign...

Fortunately, I have amazing colleagues that help each other. Nonurgent visits have been cancelled. Not all physicians need to show up for 1-2 patients. We consolidated by having a "clinic doctor" to cover the day.  Therefore this week, I am able to focus on the children's schoolwork. I am not sure how long we will have e-learning/quaran-teaching so I am truly invested in my children's education. Everything is still up in the air. Will they lengthen the schoolyear till June? Will they just let us homeschool then test then see if they are ok moving to the next grade>

Today, as a physician, I answered patient messages.  I also screened my next week's schedule and sent messages:
reschedule nonurgent
vs
urgent.

Having to juggle work and then homeschool was not easy. Understatement huh? All I did was send messages. I did not call patients. It was not doable in a crazy, chaotic,  loud home.

I definitely feel for y'all who have to work full-time, attend virtual meetings and phone calls, care for children, teach them. I had several moments that I raised my voice and spoke in a non-loving way today. A couple of times, I went to the dining room (Derrick's makeshift office) to vent my frustrations.

I have been posting stories and videos of our homeschooling journey. I want to remember the gift of staying at home, pausing and being with the children. I share our schedule here not to make people feel unequipped because we have it altogether. It's the opposite! This schedule has been thrown off 30 mins to 1 hour and we have only been doing this x 3 days.  I am also embarrassed to say that we have skipped exercise. The children went outside to play. I should just make that my yoga/stretching/barre/ANY movement is good time.

Let's end this blog post with a thankful list:
Colleagues who take initiative and plan the week.
Colleagues who cover for me so I can focus on the children's work.
Husband who helps out despite having to work from home.
Internet so we can facetime, zoom, skype, FB chat with family and friends.
Pens that made my lesson plan nice and pretty.
Doodling with Mo Willems. Now I can draw pigeons, Gerald's face and Piggie's face.
Lesson plans and worksheets from schoolteachers. I just implement what they already prepared.
Healthcare workers in the front lines
Wine

i finally had an epidural {nash's birth story}

Hubs and I decided on an epidural. Do not take offense that I included my husband in the decision-making. It was my decision. I was the final decision-maker but he was a key player in all of my deliveries. Allow me to explain.

I was exhausted and anxious. He was exhausted with only an hour of sleep. He was my labor partner for five unmedicated deliveries. He has done his fair share of supporting a laboring mother.

This decision was not an easy one. I knew what to expect with unmedicated births. I was entertaining the unknown by asking for an epidural and that made more anxious. I also felt like a failure (which I quickly shoved that lie away!) I asked myself: why do I need an epidural when women around the world go through deliveries without one? How come praying and meditating was not enough?

I did not have answers.  I knew I needed support and I could not go through another unmedicated delivery without 100% support. I kept praying and I offered up the intentions left on my instagram post. I prayed and prayed. But when  I arrived at triage and found out I was only 6 cm dilated, I made up my mind that I can have the epidural.  I knew right then. I had time to get it...
