Ms. Lucy joined me on our OOTD photos! It was difficult to make her look at the cam. She was more interested with the cars passing by... Her sibs were also napping so there was no one making goofy faces to make her giggle. Now you know why OOTD photos are all about me. Hubs usually snap them when babies are napping.

Please link up your Thanksgiving outfits and feast here!
Did you cook today? What did you make? I made this.... and steak pepper from this cookbook.... and mushroom asparagus risotto from costco cookbook...

here's a summary of my snapchat craziness...
we had a Filipino feast. My mom baked turkey legs instead of the entire turkey. My fam are true Filipinos. they like dark meat.

one weird confession: I eat deli turkey meat. I eat ground turkey. But I don't eat turkey leg or turkey breast or any meat from the Thanksgiving bird.... weird. just weird. I don't like the smell. (do you know what I am talking about??? even with Chicken breast, it has to be cooked a certain way, baked a certain way with specific spices, grilled a certain way or else I can smell something and I won't eat it!)

alrighty, I hope you join the link up. I am excited to your Thanksgiving outfits and feast!

Conversation with my manicurist {and a letter of gratitude}

I do my own nails. I splurge with an occasional pedicure every now and then. During pregnancy, I do not have a choice because I cannot reach my toes. Funny thing, my manicurist (John – name changed!) only sees me during pregnancy.

Just like my hairdresser, John pretty much knows about my life! I always request him to do my nails because he takes his time compared to the other manicurist. He also is very personable. I am not weirded out at all that a guy is doing my nails! Haha. Most of all he does a great job. I love how my nails turn out.

We talk about the usual stuff: when I am due, what plans we have for the weekend (that’s usually my mani/pedi time), the kids, when I am finally gonna start my “real” job etc. etc. But today, our conversation steered towards our grandparents. He is visiting his in CA. He said he is thankful that he speaks his native language or else he won’t be able to converse with his grandparents.

I told him proudly that my grandparents know how to speak, write and understand English. He was surprised. Things that I took for granted or things I “assumed” were the norm specially when I was young were obviously not the norm. So naive!

I am lucky to have grandparents who finished highschool. Just a little background, I am from a farming family. My maternal great-grandpa was a farmer and my greatgrandma was a homemaker. I am not sure how far they got in their education. My maternal grandma finished highschool in the 1950s. Since the US military had a big presence in the Philippines post World War II, English was taught in the school system. So that’s one advantage already there for my grandparents compared to other Southeast Asian countries.

But what I am most proud of is that my grandparents got my parents through college. Lolo P drove a cab at the Subic US Naval base (where he practiced his English) and Mama C had her own little business growing these plants to sell the citrus fruit. She’d tell us stories that she’d commute 2 hours to bring a whole week’s meal to my mom and uncle so they didn’t have to grocery shop or cook. She wanted them to focus on their studies. Plus, it’s obviously cheaper to have home cooked meals rather than eat out.

The sacrifices of my grandparents bore fruit. My mom and uncle are the first generation to achieve a degree in my family. The sacrifices of my parents also brought me where I am today.

At a young age, I saw poverty all over the Philippines. I saw hardships and hunger. My sister and I always had full bellies -- Thanks again to my grandparents and parents. Both of my parents worked overseas because compensation was better abroad. And again, thanks be to God, Mom settled here in the US. If not for that, I won’t have had the opportunity to go to private schools, obtain a degree or finish my MD training.

I see all my achievements stemming from the sacrifices of that loving mom who picked out calamansi under the heat of the sun, who rode a bus to see her kids 2 hours away bringing a basket filled to the brim. Mama C cooks really delicious Filipino food and I tried replicating those meals several times before and failed.

Oh how I miss my Mama. She raised me and my sister while mom and dad were away.

All this contemplation and gratitude came from my conversation with my manicurist. Who would have thought.

Thanks mama and lolo for all you’ve done. I miss you so much. I want to show you your greatgrandkids in person – maybe soon!

Thanks mom and dad for making that hard choice to leave me and Lady. I understand you did it for us and for our future. I don’t disagree a bit!

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever!

7 quick takes Vol. 6

It's the time of the week for 7QT and it does not even feel like a Friday. Feels like a very long {fun weekend} that already started yesterday. Thanks to:

  1. {Thanksgiving} oh what fun. My dad came from Baton Rouge. My sister and her fam came from GA.
  2. Found a {new website} for fun and quick and delicious recipes: eat, live, run. I have already made my list of recipes I'd like to try: slow cooker chicken tikka masala, whole wheat banana peach muffins, shrimp and rice casserole to name a few. Best of all, she's a great blogger, love her pictures, and she's a Christian. Meet Jenna.

    Jambalaya: before pict

Jambalaya: after pict. I overcooked the rice :( too much liquid. But the fam still ate it!
I brought home an empty pan!
3. Thanks to my lighter rotation {and happy mood} I was able to plan something (and actually get it done) for Thanksgiving. I made Jambalaya and  Roasted Carrots.

4. Had a date with my toddler this morning and watched {Wreck-it-Ralph}. Thanks Disney writers, you made me cry.....again. My little guy also cried on our way to the theater. He kept asking "where's daddy?" "why is daddy at home?" Broke....my..... heart...... That was even more proof that I need to spend quality time with him, one-on-one time. When I tuck him to bed, he says: "I want daddy to read me a book." ouch. dagger to mummy's heart.
Back to the movie: I recommend it. Just made me uncomfortable with the words that are obviously meant to be cu$$ words but changed since it's a kid movie.

one like a Son of man coming,
on the clouds of heaven

5. Feast of Christ the King this Sunday. We will have readings from the prophet Daniel (who my little one is named after). preview the readings here.
Another liturgical church year is ending... and Advent is near! Do you have any ideas on how you'll spend Advent as a family?

6.{Home call} schedule: Finalized this past week. My first home call on a weekend is during a Colts home game. I will be cheering for my team at home. My last in-hospital call is on Nov. 29th. To celebrate: my friend Sheila and hubs Derrick and kids are joining me for brunch and mimosas post-call (kids are NOT having mimosas, of course). The bell rings at 8a Nov. 30th and I am outta there ----> headed to merriment!

7. Another big celebration coming up! Isabel Francesca is turning one year old -- my lovely princess born on Black Friday!

Happy post-Thanksgiving, Black Friday y'all!

Not your typical Thanksgiving dinner

Hi Friends,
Happy Thanksgiving!

Derrick, the kids and I are going to my mom's house for Thanksgiving dinner (which is technically a very, very long lunch). We basically eat and eat and eat all day. We are serving the following:

Sinigang na Hipon (Shrimp in Tamarind Broth) - warning: not recommended as an introduction entree/soup for an All-American guy/gal trying out Filipino food. The broth is sour. It's an acquired taste. Even my hubs, who is All-American/All-Filipino rolled into one(does that make sense?) who LOVES Filipino food does not like this soup.....at all...

Beef Tenderloin

Ham

Turkey

Cranberry and Stuffing

Biko (Sweet Rice Cake) - my MIL always makes this dessert for our family gatherings (not that I am complaining!)

Baked Asparagus

Baked squash, zucchini etc.

Roasted Carrots with Honey Ginger Glaze - I figured if I make a vege side dish with honey sweetness, my picky toddler might eat it.

Jambalaya with shrimp and Andouille sausage - I randomly mentioned to mom that I am going to share this for the Thanksgiving spread. Since then, I cannot retract this suggestion even though I proposed other, more traditional Thanksgiving dishes. I served this recipe at a Cajun/New Orleans theme post-Holiday work party and the peeps liked it there. I made this once for my mom too. Must have been pretty good and she wants me to make it again.

Triple Chocolate Pumpkin Pie - I am excited for this pie. My sister is making it. yum.

Pecan Pie - again my little sis (who is definitely a better baker than me!) is making this. It's a new recipe that does not use corn syrup. She is adding sweet chocolate chips {as if the triple  chocolate pumpkin pie is not enough chocolate to satisfy our sugar receptors in our tongue and brain). She said she used this pie crust recipe that is Uber Buttery and flaky (per her exact words!)

Yup, not your typical Thanksgiving menu. But it totally shows the quirkiness of our extended family!

Eat responsibly!
