^Anointing with the chrism ~ God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people.

 Lighted candle ~ Parents and godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. This child of yours has been enlightened by Christ. He is to walk always as a child of the light. May he keep the flame of faith alive in his heart. When the Lord comes, may he go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.

White garment ~ you have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity.

On Sunday, July 23rd, Lucas was baptized along with three other babies (patron saints Charles Borromeo, Clare and Sarah).

Lucas is named after St. Luke {gospel writer} and St. Augustine {Doctor of the Church}.  While our older children took on their first name saints as their patron saint, Lucas is different. He took on St. Augustine as his patron saint and  therefore will celebrate his feastday {commonly referred to as "name day" for Catholics}

Why do we have patron saints?
By choosing a saint, we pray that our children will learn and grow in their virtues.

Why we believe in infant Baptism?
Because it is a sacrament. A sacrament is an outward sign of God's grace being imparted to us.

Because it is in the Bible. See Acts 2:38-39
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him.” (emphasis added)

What is a doctor of the Church?
Doctors of the church are designated as such because their teachings are useful to Christians "in any age of the Church." That does not mean that their words are infallible. Their teachings are considered inspired by the Holy Spirit and have made an impact on how we live as Christians.

I have two children named after the doctors of the church. Lucy Therese and Lucas Augustine.

After the gospel reading, Fr. Roberts gave a few words about Jesus' baptism. He said that for some of us, this was not our first baptism ~ then he made eye contact to me and Derrick (true!) Therefore we should know the answer already to his questions. He made a point that the Christmas season ends, not at Epiphany (most common answer), but with the Baptism of the Our Lord.
