You know you have a pre-schooler when... Vol 1

Derrick placed a ball inside D's shirt.
Derrick: you got a hunchback, Daniel.
Little D: lunch back! I got a lunch back!

D playing on Lola's iPhone
Isabel trying to get the phone.... Whines when she doesn't get it.
Lola: it's ok baby, ill give you my iPad.
Daniel: here you go Isabel. (Handing the phone to lola) where's your iPad Lola??

D: what's this? It's yucky.
Me: it's just lint.
D: mint?
Me: no, lint.
D: go away mint!

D: Why are you playing the pi-na-no?
Me: 'Cause I am a pianist. (smarty pants mom)

While picking up the kids at daycare, I have Isabel already with me when we stopped by to pick up D.
D: what's wrong with Isabel's nose? (pointing to the red mark. obviously from scratching or picking)
Me (thinking): just wait until they're teens and he points out what's wrong with her nose in public! It will be hilarious for sure.

7 quick takes Vol 24

Joining our host Jen who has an invasive procedure today (IV filter) and then expecting the delivery of her baby this weekend. quite a weekend for our host!

1.
This is the view from my "desk" this month.
It's a new month which means another rotation. (BTW, I am 1/3 done with the last year of my residency! WOOHOO!)
Not a quite impressive view of the garage and the County hospital

or the medical school research building.

But what I love the most is seeing daylight!

2.
So this is what it feels like having a desk-job. I respect y'all with office jobs (like my mom, dad, and hubs) but oh my: I feel like my butt is getting bigger every single minute sitting on this chair. This is not really "meet, greet and treat patient month" but look-at-their-brain-waves month.
Don't get me wrong. I love looking at brain waves. If not for another year of non-real doctor salary, I would totally go for a neurophysiology fellowship. ok.. ok... it's NOT all about the money. I have been a resident for a LOOOONG TIME. It's time to move on. I am taking this month to help me once I am out in the real world. I am reading as much as I can about EEGs.

See the brain waves on the side of the neuroscience building? Those are delta waves -- slow waves. The artist who designed this should have asked a neurophysiologist. I'd want alpha frequency waves if I got asked.

3.
Another cool thing about not being on your feet all day -- I get to wear these lovelies:

And these too:

Wedges and kitten heel pumps both by Calvin Klein via Nordstrom rack.
{sorry for the sunburned feet}

4.
As a doctor, I am definitely used to explaining procedures to patients that I might sound nonchalant talking about them. oh a venous filter -- oh that's easy. oh, an aneurysm clipping.... oh a Left hemispherectomy.... disclaimer: I am not a surgeon, I don't perform those procedures. I was just making a point.

What I do on a much regular basis is perform lumbar punctures or spinal taps. Thanks to Jen's post -- it reminded me that parents  and patients are scared just hearing "spinal tap."  I must remember to be compassionate and understanding when explaining the procedure. Honest, must give facts but compassionate.

A parent once told me this before I performed a spinal tap: "take care of my baby."
Oh yes I did. I surely took good care of her baby.

sharing my finds from zulily!

intended to be a future baby bag -- but once it arrived: I wanna use it for work!

this one is for work. A little tiny for my taste (I am one of those with humongous work bags) but this one's very classy. It has not arrived yet.

and did you see my five faves post showing my leopard espadrille?

day in the life of the D-crew

4:45a
Crying baby. "She must be hungry or she pooped", says my insightful husband.

5:10a
Hubs and baby girl came in our room. "She did pee a lot!" Says hubs.

5:11a
She's in between us. We were all trying to fall asleep. Isabel pinching me everywhere. Mostly my hands and forearms and elbow. Used to be my neck and it hurt. I was her comfort blanket.

5:12a
Aawwwww! I screamed. She pinched me really hard!

5:13a
Isabel crying. She didn't like my outburst at all.

5:15a
Baby still crying so my husband took her out of the room. (My guess, he took her downstairs to feed her)

5:41a
I was right. Came back my husband sans baby. "I fed her Cheerios. She was hungry."

7:44a
Yay! I did fall back asleep. Kids are asleep. Woohoo, this is my day of sleeping in.

7:45a
Still lying in bed. Not wanting to get up.

7:47a
Baby girl crying in her room. I'm ignoring her. Hubs came in our room with her.... Again.

7:49a
I have my iPad. Isabel has my iPhone.

7:51a
She dropped my phone. Next to her... Why oh why?
She fell back asleep. Yessssss!

8:03a
Daniel comes barging in our room. "Mama, where's daddy?"
Shhhh, Hun. Your sissy is asleep.
Oh he didn't care. "I wanna go downstairs!"

8:04a
Ok. Ok. Lets go downstairs. Isabel woke up anyway.

8:05a
Lets go check out papa outside. He's plowing the driveway.

8:07a
Kids busy watching their dad. So I toasted a chocolate chip bagel. Cooked an egg over medium. Filled up the kids' sippy cups... And mine.

8:12a
Eating our breakfast

8:29a
Kids are still eating, amazing enough.

8:31a
Now they are done.
Wash their hands and finish my egg sandwich in Peace. Or not.

8:42a
Kids running around. Watching their dad who is still outside.
(Our driveway is pretty loooonnnnggg)

8:59
I was shopping zulily. And suddenly.

9:00a
My basket became empty!!!! Ahhhhhh!
I lost these precious, beautiful find!

9:03a
I was still not giving up. Trying and trying to look for those wedges. Kids just sitting next to me on the stairs.

9:22a
Derrick kissing us goodbye. He still has to go to work. It's only a 2 hour delay for him.
Before that, belly pict first for my pregnancy journal.

9:26a
Alright kids. Lets work out. We danced Zumba.

9:38a
Huffin and puffin while doing the samba.

9:49a
Ok. One more song. I'm gonna skip African beats...

10:01a
Yay, cool down

10:14a
Daniel wants to play with his trains but I told him we should learn how to write his name.

10:17a
I fooled him, we finished writing Daniel. But I wanted him to learn how to write his Full name! He's such a sport. He finished writing Isaac and Delima with his mama. Isabel was busy scribbling next to us.

10:22a
Playing with trains...

10:37a
Posting my belly bump update

10:48a
I need to prep some rice for our lunch. And also freeze more mangoes for our smoothies.

10:52a
Isabel pointing at the counter.
Gosh she's hungry. I gave her a piece of banana.

10:55a
Grunting and grunting. Hmmmm......

10:57a
Isabel pointing to the stairs. Smart girl. She wants to be changed because she pooped.

10:58a
Diaper change

11:18a
Lunch time for the ladies.
Daniel is not hungry. That boy is living off of ketones. Or something. He barely eats.

11:29a
Isabel still eating. I'm watching the morning news and eating.

11:35a
Clean up time. Daniel did a great job putting away his trains and tracks.

11:42a
Isabel done with her lunch too.

11:45a
Clean up for all

12:00p
I turned on EWTN on my iPad.

12:15p

Five favorites {spring edition}

1.
Tulips and Easter Lilies
They are just sooo beautiful.

2.
Patanol eye drops
With the advent of #1 means pollen count of trees and other flowers is rising. April is my worst seasonal allergy month. Patanol is my best friend. It clears my allergic conjunctivitis. I paid $40 for a tiny bitty 5 mL bottle before. About two years ago, my co-pay went down to $10!

3.
Warm weather & dresses
No. More. Snow.
More daylight too!
These are the dresses I'm obsessing so far. I should look for maternity versions!

All 3 from whitehouseblackmarket

4.
Wedges
I love these! I used to own a comfortable pair --- from Payless shoes source! I wore them till the straps gave up and died!
I'm still on the hunt for nice comfy wedges. Saw some at Hush puppies and zulily! I got this pair: will this pair be IT? (Will update once the package arrives.... Cannot wait!)

5.
Vacation
My family goes on vacation around spring time. We've been to SC in April 2010; St. Augustine and Atlanta in April 2011; St Simons island in 2012.
This year the trip is a little later in the springtime. Stay tuned!

Mom with a white coat

Thanks to wiws link ups etc i found quite a few moms who are also wohm like me.
Colleen is hosting this link up.... Thought I'd join the fun!

What do you do for work and why do you work?
I'm a pediatric neurologist in training. I'm 1/3 done with my last year of residency.
I work because I've always wanted to be a mom and a doctor. School was number 1 in my life until I met my husband and we got married. Now I know who has my number 1 attention and love!
I always joke that if I started dating Derrick before med school, I'd probably not go to med school anymore and just start having babies!

Did your mother work?
Yes, she did (and she's still working). She commuted to the city which is 2 hours away to teach engineering at the University of Santo Tomas when I was a baby. She was gone Monday to Friday. She didn't change diapers till her grand kids were born! Fact!
My grandma did all the work when my sis and I were babes.

Lola smothering her grand kids with kisses

my typical work day...
It has changed since my first year of residency almost 5 years ago. For the better!
I used to work 70-80 hours a week, sleeping at the hospital every 4th night.... From 7a-5p on regular days and 7a-1p next day {or 2:30p some post call days}
Now i start at 7:15a when there's morning report
8a is the start of a clinic day or day in the wards depending on the month
Noon we have lectures
See more patients in the afternoon
Then hopefully done dictating or writing notes by 5-5:30p
When I'm on call now, I'm at home! Yippee!

What's the best part about having a job?
Helping other kids

What's your least favorite part?
Leaving my little ones

What would make your life easier?
Once I'm working part time! I hope it will be a good balance of working and being at home with the kids.
Honestly, working full time is manageable. I have a great support system. My hubs most of all is the best!
My in-laws and mom also lend a helping hand babysitting kids so Derrick and I can go on dates or leave for a weekend (or a week!)

How do your children handle their mom's career?
They are handling it pretty well. I haven't missed soccer games or dance recitals or anything. They're still little...
Daniel is soooo used to having just daddy cause I worked so much in his first years that he is genuinely surprised when I'm there and daddy is still at work. Although I'm a bit hurt that I'm absent mom....

Do you feel supported in what you do?
Absolutely. My mom, husband, friends and family support my crazy chosen path. Derrick knew I could not just be a stay at home mama. Even when I was adamant to not finish residency after having Daniel. I just wanted to spend all waking and sleeping moments with my little boy.... Then Isabel came. Gosh, she's a different battle. It was actually a break to be outside the home... Derrick was right. I found out pretty fast I'm not made for household chores --- because I don't like them!

What are your future goals when it comes to work/motherhood?
As long as I can pay my med school loans and send my kids to school, I'd like to work part-time. I also want to be involved in my kids' school. Maybe even volunteer my time. I've always enjoyed teaching. I can be a school teacher helper. Or a chaperone when the kids go on field trips!

kids visiting mummy at work when I had in-hospital calls

What are some tips that help you balance it all?
Prayer
Taking time for self
Quality time with my husband... Who's número UNO above the kids.
Like what we learned from our pre wedding retreat: he and I are the poles holding up the laundry clothesline. Our kids depend and hang on the clothesline of our love and marriage. He's my partner and I should always place him as most important!
